46:365 Socks Done!

Just in time for a 90 degree day…woo! Ok time to get ready for work. Tonight I start to tackle the Bog Jacket (again).

I had two epiphanies today.

Epiphany 1: I will not cast-on a new project until I finish 3 WIPS

  • First – I will finish my knee socks since I just have the cuff.
  • Second – I will finish the Bog Jacket. This means I have to sit my butt down and work out all the shaping and color changes once and for all. I’m really close to finishing but I’m being lazy
  • Third – I will finish something from the WIP bag. I’m thinking of finishing the Cabled Riding Jacket I start last summer. I gave it up because the pattern is overly complicated and vague in it’s directions PLUS it gave me cubital tunnel syndrome and I couldn’t knit for months. I have 3/4 of a sleeve and collar left. I think I can safely work on those without hurting myself.

Epiphany 2: Sweater design.

At some point today I had a flash of design inspiration. I bought some lovely pink and grey yarn in Argentina with the plan to combine in some sort of sweater. At the time I was thinking a stripey sweater T but today I thought about something a little more interesting. My plan is to knit a little sweater T with a circular yoke and a henley-style collar in a really simple f-argyle (fake argyle) pattern. I think it will be really sweet when it’s done (if I knit it right) and I can probably wear it alone or over a white button down.

I got home and started my swatch. I’m using EPS to figure out how to knit this thing and yes I will use steeks to do the henley-style collar. I LOVE STEEKS! (when do you see that said in a knitting blog?) Of course, I can’t start this until the other WIPs are done but I can work out the details of the pattern so I’m ready to cast this sucker on as soon as those other three things are done! Plus this gives me EXTRA motivation to finish. With that being said, I’m going to sign off and get back to my sock.

I don’t have much to say today. Still working on my knee socks and my Bog Jacket. I’m at the point where I have to figure out where to start my shoulder and arm shaping on the jacket plus I have to figure out the color pattern for the arms. I don’t really have the focus at the moment to work it all out so I’m working my way through the knee sock while I think about it. I hope to map it all out this weekend. Once that’s done I can breeze through the jacket and maybe finish the knittng next week. Then I have to trim it in icord and find a zipper. I’m hoping for another FO soon (she says crossing her fingers).

We have an outing at work tomorrow so I don’t have to go to the office which is nice. I do have to spend a few hours at a country club doing nothing. I wish I could golf or take a lesson but I can’t. I’m trying to figure out a project to bring with me while I sit around. It’s between the knee socks and Carl’s sweater. They’re both pretty portable but it’s supposed to hot tomorrow and the thought of knitting an alpaca sweater outside in the heat just makes me cringe but it’s a few hours that I can work on it without him seeing. What to do? I guess I just have to make a decision before I leave tomorrow.

We’re currently watching the Mayor Bloomberg channel (i.e. nyc.gov tv) and the commercials are insane! Everything from help MS to global warming killing children with on train tracks to video pirating. I’m very confused. I don’t know how I feel about all these ads…

Anyway  I want to CONGRATULATIONS to my good friend Sarah who just got engaged!!! I’m so happy for her. She says she can’t stop looking at the ring. I remember those days, it’s so nice!! I still look at mine and smile. Finding yourself in this life is wonderful but finding someone you can be yourself with is simply amazing . I wish them both all the happiness in the world. YAY Sarah!!

The week got away from me again. Work has been crazy and we’ve had a visitors so I haven’t had time to sit down and blog. Luckily I can’t sleep past 6:30am anymore so I’ve had time to wake up relax and get my thoughts together for a post. Nothing like waking up early for no reason. I guess this means I’m getting older but I’m going to try to not think about that.

I was making amazing progress on the Bog Jacket and then I forgot to cast-on extra stitches for the sleeves. I have to rip back a few rows and cast them on but I’m letting that sit for a bit. As I’ve been working on this I keep thinking I need more colors like something dark to set off the grey stripe down the top of the arm so I ordered 4 balls of yarn from Cestari. I ordered a couple dark blues, a yellow and a thistle color. I’ll see which one I like when they get here and others should make great hats of something. Worsted weight merino never goes to waste.  In the meantime I’m working away on the second knee sock. I’ve turned the heel and I’m going up the leg now! I hope to finish it by next weekend. We’ll see if I can do that.

I’m finding that I’m not really interested in these simple knits. They’re not holding my attention like the Corrie Vest did. I think it’s nearly time for another fair isles knit. I won’t start till I’m done with the jacket and the sock – Promise! But the question I have is which do I knit: Autumn Rose Pullover or Bressay Cardigan? I have the yarn for both of these but I can’t decide. Autumn Rose is gorgeous and modern in its shaping but Bressay is tradition fair isle.  Help me!

You might be wondering why this post is called “Par-tay” well that’s because today is my Dad’s 60th Birthday Party!! I’m super psyched to celebrate with him. My Dad and his family love a good time so it should be a fun afternoon. Plus my brother is driving me so I don’t have to worry about packing a bag to stay over night, or finding a parking spot when I get back or if I drink an extra glass of wine. Today is going to be a good day.

The last 48 hours have been a bit of a blur. Saturday night we saw one of our favorite artists, Martin Sexton, and had a blast. Yesterday I had to drag my tired, slightly hung over ass out of bed and drive to Stamford to have my hair and makeup trial for the wedding. The appointment was great. Lots of ladies milling around me telling me I’m sweet and pretty and adorable. I have to say it felt wonderful. Then I was off to my Dad’s for an early dinner and then back to the city. It took my over an hour to find parking. At one point I was actually stuck in the middle of Third Avenue because the street was blocked off for a street fair that finished before I get there and the only other direction I could drive was blocked by a garbage truck cleaning up said street fair. Oh and I had to pee. By the time I parked the car and got home I just wanted the day to end. We order frozen yogurt, vegged and went to be early. This morning I woke up and it felt like I slept 3 hours instead of 8 and I’ve been in a fog ever since.

On the plus side, I went to the dentist today and I don’t have any new cavities which is AMAZING. This is shocking for me. I spend more time at my dentist than I do anywhere else. We’re very close now. I do not have “american” teeth. The government can put all the fluoride they want in my water but it won’t help. My teeth suck. But today they made me proud and I don’t have to see my dentist till a week before the wedding so she can give them another good cleaning. Go me!!!

Enough of these tangents. This is a knitting blog so let’s get back to the knitting. I started the toe of my second sock Saturday and I’m now on the foot. But of course I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t get all distracted and start something else while trying to finish a project. On Saturday I also cast on for a Bog Jacket with some yarn I bought at MDSW. Its wonderful 2-ply super fine merino from Cestari. The yarn is wonderful to work with and I think I need to order more of it in future. I’m making the jacket in their moss color and will have accents of smoke. I will take pictures as soon as I find the charger for my camera (or buy batteries for my SLR). Thanks to the mindlessness of garter stitch I’m nearly through my waist shaping. I think it’s going to be a really cute jacket for the fall when all is said and done.

I have to keep reminding myself to work on the sock though. I’ve never suffered from second sock syndrome and I don’t plan on starting now!

I’m too tired to write anymore and frankly I’m too lazy to proof this post. If this made absolutely no sense I apologize. And I must be tired because it took my 12 tries to spell absolutely. I’m going to curl up on the couch and maybe sleep. God I hope I’m just tired from the weekend not because I’m getting sick. That would suck. I hope you all had nice weekends!

Yesterday morning I cast on the Heart Hat by Elizabeth Zimmerman and now it’s done!

Isn’t it adorable?! Over Christmas my soon to be SIL Jen mentioned that she wanted a really cool hat so I’ve been on a mission to find just the right pattern. I found this pattern and some leftover bits of yarn in my stash and viola — HAT! I wasn’t in the mood to start my second sock yesterday and thought this would be a nice, quick break. I just have to pop down to the post office this morning and ship it out to her. I hope she likes it as much as I do. I wonder if I have enough to make a second one for me…hmm…

Now it’s back to sock 2.

It’s finally Friday which means I finally have some time to myself. By some time I mean about 10 minutes before I have to rush out of the house to meet a friend of ours at his new apartment. Camping was glorious. We spent 4 days in the woods with nothing to do but feed ourselves, read, knit and play scrabble. I don’t know why we ever left.

As promised I worked on my knee sock and finally finished the first one on Thursday night. I would have finished sooner had I not been distract all all the books I was reading over the weekend. I finished the first three Lady Emily Mysteries which were fun but not serious. Which is the perfect kind of camp reading.

After looking at all the books I’ve devoured in the last couple weeks and all the other books we have lying around the apartment I realized it was time for me to finally break down and buy myself a Kindle. I’ve been decidely anti-Kindle since it came out. To me there is nothing better than the feel and smell of a book. But at some point we all have to be a little practical and frankly we have no more room for books. I feel like I’ve betrayed myself a little but really it’s for the best…right?

Since we’ve been back things have been busy. Just missing one day of work has really put us both behind but I’ve managed to finish at least one project this week. May I present the most adorbale baby sweater EVER!

I gave it to the mommy this morning and she loved it!! I can’t wait for the baby to get here so she can wear it.

Ooo I’m going to late! I have to run…

We’re off to Rhode Island for some camping this weekend but before we get there we have to take a little detour. We’re driving up to the Boston area so we can meet Mom at her sewing class Saturday morning so I can finally try on my wedding dress!!! I’m so excited to finally see the dress! I’ve tried on the muslin version but I haven’t seen it put together with all the fabrics. It’s going to be spectacular. Of course Carl will have to busy himself in the morning so I’m sending him to get the oil changed. I think that should keep him busy long enough to miss me in the dress.

Of course I’m bringing my knitting with me. I’m about halfway up the leg of the first knee sock already. Let’s see how much I can get done by Tuesday. Maybe I can even finish this thing!!! I really should bring the little baby sweater I knit for my colleague since the baby is almost here and only one sleeve is sewn in but I think I have enough time before we head out for me to get one more sleeve done. Heck, if Carl is late might be able to even sew the collar on! I’m not knitting the booties since I’ve had issues with booties in the past. For some reason they never come out right so I’ve given up on them. Instead I bought her little sheepskin booties for the baby. They’re a little warm for this time of year but come fall they’ll be perfect.

Enough yapping, it’s time for me to finish packing and get those sleeves in. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

I spent most of yesterday trying to make up the work I didn’t get to do on Sunday. It was a very long day and frankly all I wanted to do was curl up on the couch with my knitting and veg. I guess you have to be an adult sometimes and take care of your responsibilities though. I still haven’t caught up but I’ve made some good headway which is very important. I really want to do well since this is the first BIG project I’ve had in a while and I think it’s the kind of thing that people may notice and could serve me well. I will just have to keep plugging away and hope everything gets sorted in the end.

Tonight was our last golf lesson (which means I got to work a little less today which was nice) and we finally had good weather. We’ve met some pretty cool people through these lessons and it felt a bit like summer camp at the end. Everyone was exchanging their contact information so we can meet up and play a few rounds together or just hit some balls at the range. We even talked about making Tuesday nights are beer and driving range night. We’ll see if we all follow through.

I managed to turn the heel on my knee high socks when I finally got some down time last night. So I’m on to the leg which will be pretty mindless but just what I need at the moment. I hope to finish at least one sock by the end of our upcoming camping weekend. Let’s see if I can do it.

I still need to pick up around the neck on my Corrie Vest but I haven’t had the time to really focus on it. I’m hoping things will slow down as the week goes on so I can finish all the knitting before we head out. But I guess if I don’t I can always finish it in the car on Friday. It’s not like I’ll have anything else to do right? I can’t wait till I can call this project done. It’s probably my most involved project to date and it will feel so good to finally be able to wear it. Of course I will have to promptly put it away with the rest of my winter clothes but it will still feel good even as a sweat through the picture taking process.

I’m so tired and it’s not even 10pm. I guess I should sign off and find some comfy clothes to relax in before I pass out for the night. It’s been a long week and it’s only Tuesday. Wish me luck with the rest of the week. Pictures of my sock soon!

As of this morning I am officially done with the colorwork on the Corrie Vest!!!!

IMG_0157

I’m so excited! But also a little nervous because this means I have cut the steeks this weekend. EEEK!

In the meantime I’m starting a simple stockinette pair of knee highs with some yummy Zauberball from  Schoppel Wolle colorway Charisma. It’s super relaxing and easy after the vest. I’m using Streets and YOs’ basic knee high toe-up sock pattern. It’s straightforard and the yarn is gorgeous! Plus they’re perfect for our camping trip that’s coming up.

So tonight I’m just going to kick back, relax and work on my socks. I will worry about the steeks tomorrow or maybe Saturday.
