Let me first say that I had a great weekend. It was nice to see Sarah. It’s been way too long since we’ve hung out. It was great to catch up and even better to have her cook (she’s amazing). I also had a bridal shower on Sunday and that was lovely too. I got to see old acquintances and be girly. What made the weekend long was the fact that this weekend my body decided to hate me.

Friday was great. We had every intention of cleaning but of course we got distracted and watch Shutter Island instead. Which you all must watch if you haven’t already. It’s beautifully filmed but you should expect that from Scorsese. I woke up Saturday morning and every joint in my body ached. When I say ached I mean I could barely walk or sit, nothing was either comfortable or pain-free. This normally happens to my knees when it’s about to rain or if the pressure changes too much. Never has it effected my other joints. I was miserable (and it didn’t even rain!) and I still had to clean the apartment. So I hobbled around cleaning the bathrooms while Carl took care of the rest of the apartment, god bless him. Carl eventually gave me a bunch of motrin and I decided to pass out for a few hours before Sarah arrived in the vain hope that I would be better.

The pain was nearly gone by the time Sarah arrived and everything was great. We went food shopping, we ate dinner and watched a movie. THEN my stomach decided it hated me too and I got sick. I guess I ate something bad on Friday but lord knows what it was.

I was still sick Sunday morning but it stopped in time for me to go to the shower and only be an hour late. By the time I got home again I was exhausted. I gave up and passed out on the couch.

Today I feel much better but not 100%. I really don’t know what the heck happened this weekend but I know I don’t like it. As long as my body is done revolting against me I’ll be happy. Though I’m sure the blessed curse will come just to finish me off.

Anyway, I didn’t manage much knitting this weekend but I have split for the fronts on the bog jacket and now hope to finish the knitting this week. I have a feeling that I messed up the upper body of the jacket though. I may have to rip back. I do know 100% that the sleeves are too long but that’s easy, I’ll just roll them up or make a cuff or something. For now I will soldier on.

P.S. I sound so pious in this post…where did that come from?

P.P.S. Just look down at my hand and I have hives! WTF???

I’ve had a nice relaxing weekend. The outing on Friday was actually pretty nice and I didn’t touch my knitting once. The club was beautiful and we were only there for 3 hours. We spent most of our time on a boat ride around the lake and at lunch so I was prety well entertained. Despite my lack of knitting during the outing I managed to finish the leg of the second sock and I’m now working on the cuff. This pair will be done before you know it.

Yesterday we took Dad out for a round of golf. We had a great time but I really sucked. I’m thinking too much. All these lessons have me thinking about too many things. My swing was off, my aim was terrible and by the 16th hole I was too tired from the sun that I could barely swing the club with enough speed to be move the ball any worthwhile distance. But this was the 3rd round I ever played so I can’t expect to be Tiger Woods now can I. On the plus side, my putting is improving!

Carl and I spent the night at my Dad’s. We had lots of wine, a lovely dinner and played with the doggie. It was great. We got back to the city mid morning and Carl left for work. Since then I’ve been plugging away on his sweater. The front is finished and on holders. I need to do the shoulder shaping on the back but I don’t really want to do it right now so I started the cuff of the first sleeve. It looks like I will actually finish this beofre the wedding!!

I don’t have much to say today. Still working on my knee socks and my Bog Jacket. I’m at the point where I have to figure out where to start my shoulder and arm shaping on the jacket plus I have to figure out the color pattern for the arms. I don’t really have the focus at the moment to work it all out so I’m working my way through the knee sock while I think about it. I hope to map it all out this weekend. Once that’s done I can breeze through the jacket and maybe finish the knittng next week. Then I have to trim it in icord and find a zipper. I’m hoping for another FO soon (she says crossing her fingers).

We have an outing at work tomorrow so I don’t have to go to the office which is nice. I do have to spend a few hours at a country club doing nothing. I wish I could golf or take a lesson but I can’t. I’m trying to figure out a project to bring with me while I sit around. It’s between the knee socks and Carl’s sweater. They’re both pretty portable but it’s supposed to hot tomorrow and the thought of knitting an alpaca sweater outside in the heat just makes me cringe but it’s a few hours that I can work on it without him seeing. What to do? I guess I just have to make a decision before I leave tomorrow.

We’re currently watching the Mayor Bloomberg channel (i.e. tv) and the commercials are insane! Everything from help MS to global warming killing children with on train tracks to video pirating. I’m very confused. I don’t know how I feel about all these ads…

Anyway  I want to CONGRATULATIONS to my good friend Sarah who just got engaged!!! I’m so happy for her. She says she can’t stop looking at the ring. I remember those days, it’s so nice!! I still look at mine and smile. Finding yourself in this life is wonderful but finding someone you can be yourself with is simply amazing . I wish them both all the happiness in the world. YAY Sarah!!

We’re off to Rhode Island for some camping this weekend but before we get there we have to take a little detour. We’re driving up to the Boston area so we can meet Mom at her sewing class Saturday morning so I can finally try on my wedding dress!!! I’m so excited to finally see the dress! I’ve tried on the muslin version but I haven’t seen it put together with all the fabrics. It’s going to be spectacular. Of course Carl will have to busy himself in the morning so I’m sending him to get the oil changed. I think that should keep him busy long enough to miss me in the dress.

Of course I’m bringing my knitting with me. I’m about halfway up the leg of the first knee sock already. Let’s see how much I can get done by Tuesday. Maybe I can even finish this thing!!! I really should bring the little baby sweater I knit for my colleague since the baby is almost here and only one sleeve is sewn in but I think I have enough time before we head out for me to get one more sleeve done. Heck, if Carl is late might be able to even sew the collar on! I’m not knitting the booties since I’ve had issues with booties in the past. For some reason they never come out right so I’ve given up on them. Instead I bought her little sheepskin booties for the baby. They’re a little warm for this time of year but come fall they’ll be perfect.

Enough yapping, it’s time for me to finish packing and get those sleeves in. Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Yesterday I did two things, I read and I picked out the last fabric for my wedding gown. You’ll notice that neither of those things are knitting related in anyway. I’m a very bad knitter (but an excellent reader!).

After finishing  The Dead Travel Fast on Saturday I jumped right into another Deanna Raybourn book, Silent in the Grave. I was so engrossed in the story they I barely put it down, reading late into the evening last night so I could finish the story. And alas, no knitting. I made of point of ordering the next book instead of stopping by the bookstore tonight so I will at least have reading free night tonight and maybe tomorrow. My amazon orders ship pretty darn fast and it should be here tomorrow but you never know. I’m still aiming for cutting my steeks this weekend and I will stick to my plan even if I have to leave Lady Julia and Brisbane alone for a few nights to do it.

The only time I did put the book down yesterday was to head downtown to Lace Star to pick out the last and possibly most fun fabric for my wedding dress — beaded lace. Here’s just a little taste of what we had to choose from:

I won’t tell you which one we chose but here’s my little seamstress (a.k.a my mother) making sure we had enough lace for the dress.

The rest of the dress is a gorgeous dupioni silk in a slightly off-white. Really it’s just the natural color of the silk but when I say natural it always makes me think of something darker and more creamy. It’s going to be stunning!!! I can’t wait to show off the finished dress in a few months time. I’d show it sooner but Carl might look and that would be very bad luck. And we wouldn’t want that.

OOO just got the call with Carl’s ETA so it’s time for me to wrap this up and put dinner on.

We had an excellent time at Dad’s house yesterday. We played with the puppy and he LOVED his little knee cap treat thing.

Brinks The Spoiled Puppy

I want it I want it...

Thank you daddy!!

yum yum yum

I think we all love him a little too much. But how could you not love that face? And those little paws…he’s so cute!

Dinner at our reception place was amazing. We had a regular dinner and then between courses they would bring out all kinds of things to taste. I think my favorite part was dessert. A fight nearly broke out at the table over who got to eat the sticky toffee pudding. It was heavenly and no one wanted to share. I’m still stuffed this morning.

Between playing with the puppy and gorging myself I managed to finish all the hexagons including the 2 half hexagons and I cast-on on the for first sleeve this morning before we left. I guess this means I’m a little ahead of schedule.

Driving back was really interesting. I guess the rain storm that came through last night was 10x worse in Westchester than it was in CT. As we got closer to the city more and more trees were down. Some of them even brought down the power lines. We stopped by my brother’s building near Fort Tryon park so Carl could quickly show an apartment to a buyer and there were so many fallen trees. Some of them landed on cars others were just scattered around the park, some of them rather large. There were dead umbrellas and umbrella parts all over the streets and when we got back into the car after the appointment it actually started to hail. Half way to the apartment the sun came out…we’re confused. Is more stormy weather on the way are we finally done? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Just a short post today. I have to get comfy and start doing my work work so I’m not in trouble tomorrow. Thankfully I can do it all from the comfort of my couch.

Yes I have a "Princess" mug, Carl has a "Prince" mug but I bought it before I met him...shh don't tell him

We’re heading out to CT tonight to see my dad and to have dinner at our reception place so we can taste the menu. We’ve tried twice before to do a tasting and failed. The first time it snowed so bad in CT that dad had to cancel. The second time it snowed again and the town where we’re having reception was covered in ice so the restaurant closed early and they had to cancel on us. Today it’s supposed to rain heavily and there might be flooding in areas. We’re hoping none of this keeps us from being able to taste the menu!! My mom and I are hoping that we’re getting all the bad weather out-of-the-way before the wedding. But if it rains on my big day then so be it. I’m already planning on getting myself a pair of wedding wellies just in case there’s rain or mud.

I started the 9th and final full hexagon last night and I hope to finish it up this morning on our drive. After that I only have two half hexagons and two sleeves to knit. I was hoping to finish the half hexagons tomorrow but my boss asked if I could do some work this weekend since we’re all swamped (yay tax time!) so I have work to do tomorrow but I can do it all from home so it’s not that bad. Plus I get overtime pay and I can totally use the extra cash (really who doesn’t need extra cash?). I”m going to try to finish the two halves tonight. I should be able to finish them as long as dad’s dog, Brinks, doesn’t demand too much of my time. I have a secret weapon though! I bring him these all natural organic cow parts that he goes gaga over. They’re gross and carrying them home on the bus is just plain weird but the dogs go nuts for them and they’re good for them too. So this time I’m bring him a cow scapula and a knee cap. So gross but I promise you the puppies LOVE them. Over Christmas I brought him an achilles tendon and he stopped playing with all of us and just chewed on his treat. I’ve never seen him so calm and happy. It’s so worth the gross out factor.

I finished watching Sit and Spin last night and I L-O-V-E-D it! Jacey is a great teacher and I’m totally inspired to spin more. I have some roving hidden under my desk at work that I’m going to bring back here on Monday so I can practice my thick and thin. Once I’ve mastered that I want to try coils! I’m thinking of making one night a week my spinning night. I don’t spin enough for my liking and I need to give myself the time to practice and get better. I’m thinking it might be a good Monday night activity. Monday’s are usually awful and tiring. It would be nice to come home and relax to the rhythmic motion and sound of spinning. What do you think?

I never showed you the finished shrug!

This would be the bridal shower outfit

I actually don’t hate it and I think it looks great with the bridal shower dress. Actually, I bought the dress for Argentina in case we did a fake wedding reception down there with the family that might not be able to make it to the real wedding. We had a party but it was more informal than I thought. It was a great time though and I ate parts of a cow I never thought were edible. And they were surprisingly  yummy. Anyway, I think this outfit will be perfect for whatever my bridesmaids come up with! Now what shoes to wear? I want fabulous high heels since I can’t wear them to the wedding, Carl’s not tall enough (or I’m too tall if you want to look at it that way).

I do have another show and tell item. I recently bought Carl and I matching dork shirts.

It Came Outta Nowhere!

Isn’t it awesome!!! I keep telling Carl it should be our gym wear. He doesn’t find that as funny as I do.

I have a new (to me) designer to share with you all thanks to So KnitPicky. Ori Ami Knits designs are so cool and modern. I really dig them. I think the Airfoil Skirt is my favorite! I have to add it to my queue so I can find it again. I wonder if I have anything in the stash that will work? hmmm…

I finished my third hexagon for joyella yesterday so I think I’m on target to have all the hexagons done by next week so I can seam and knit the sleeves. Sadly, the weather is warming up so I probably won’t be able to wear this until the fall. I can’t wait to see the finish product though. I think it’s going to be really cool.

OOO dinner just arrived…time to eat!

Another very late post today but it’s been a long day. I woke up really early for no particular reason today and then I passed out again a few hours later and I woke up for good I was in a daze. After that I had to hit the ground running. Carl spent the day cleaning the apartment which is great except that we usually fight when he’s cleaning so I left and went to mom’s so I could mail out our save the dates and sew in the zipper on Grandpa’s vest. My grandfather lives down the street from my mom and he keeps a P.O. at the post office so when I go there I usually run into him. I arrived at the post office and surprisingly he wasn’t there. While mailing out our save the dates to our foreign guests I struck up a conversation with the post office lady about my grandfather and my grandmother. I love talking to people who knew my grandma. She was such a great lady and it’s so nice to hear that people outside the family loved her and miss her as well.
Who pulled into the parking lot as I was leaving? Gramps of course. We said hello and had a little chat and then I quickly ran to mom’s so I could finish his vest. I sewed in my first EVER zipper (go me!) and drove over to Gramps’ to give him is gift. He was shocked to see me again and was very happy about the warm wooly vest!!! And it fit!!!

He wouldn't let me take a picture of his face.

I snuck one picture. I’m sad that I couldn’t get a shot of the knot detail on the back but what can you do?

Normally when you visit Grandpa you’re never allowed outside the kitchen but once he saw me taking a picture he asked if I could take a couple pictures of some portraits of my great great (maybe a few more greats) Grandparents from Italy without using flash. I said of course I could and Mom and I were escorted upstairs! I never knew these portraits were of family members. He lives in an old Victorian that’s filled with antiques and beautiful prints and paintings. I always thought they were just portraits that he or my Grandmother liked. So I now I have photographic proof of my Italian heritage.

Great Great....Grandma

Great Great...Grandpa

For most of my life my Grandfather denied he was Italian. I think he did this because back in the 30’s it wasn’t so “cool” to be Italian and this side of the family was and is all about keeping up appearances so to speak. But with a name like Carbone how can you deny it! After Carl and I met with Gramps to tell him we were engaged he shook Carl’s hand, looked him square in the eye and said “Remember Son, Ginnys have long memories.” That was the first time I ever heard him admit he was Italian and I’m so happy he’s starting to open up (ok it’s just a little bit but it’s something) about our family. There’s so much I want to know about who we are as a family. Maybe I can stop by for lunch one of these days and grill him for information. It’s only fair after the grilling he gave Carl, right?

Now for the sad part the day (well that depends on how you look at things). Mom and I went to Pearl River after visiting Gramps so we could have lunch and we sort of went to The Stitchery and Adam sort of enabled me. There was this beautiful Norah Gaughan sweater in the store and I just had to have it so I bought the yarn…and the pattern and some yarn and a pattern for a baby sweater for a colleague. I was bad. I know. I’m sorry. But to remedy the situation I’m going to knit both of these things really fast so they don’t really become stash. And then I swear I will be good. When I told Adam I was on a diet and he was a bad bad man he said “a yarn diet!?” like I was insane. Am I insane? No, this is a good thing. I guess this is like the recovering alcoholic having a drink. I just have to get back on the wagon. Baby steps Bob, baby steps.

After shopping and lunch I had to run back to the city to pick up Carl from and appointment and then we had to get ready for dinner with friends (known as Family Dinner) and now we’re very stuffed and lounging around the house. Since it’s nearly bed time I’m going to sign off. I’m sorry I failed miserably told be it won’t happen I again…promise!

Today’s (very late) stash flash is the sumptuous mohair yarn I bought in BA.

I don’t know which store it came from since I spent the day walking up and down the yarn district going into any store that was open. Some shops were like the shops you see here in the States and others were more like a bargin bin store. Just a store filled with bins of yarn. Most of the yarn was acrylic but behind one of the counters at one of the stores was this BEAUTIFUL orange mohair and I just had to have it. I bought three balls of yarn for 30 pesos which is about $8 dollars (completely insane). I didn’t have a project in mind, I just loved it. The other day I showed you the sketch of want I’d like to make with this. I think it will make a great vest. A whole sweater of this stuff would be way too hot but a vest will be perfect. I’d like to swatch it this weekend so I can work out some of the kinks and maybe cast-on.  Eventually I’d like to post the pattern here on the blog. As long as it’s not awful.

On a different note, Carl apparently likes to watch me write these posts which I find a little creepy. I don’t mind him reading them when they’re done but to watch me type them is just weird. I feel like I’m Doogie Howser or something…it’s just wrong.

Anyway, We labeled and stamped our save the dates this evening so they can go out tomorrow. Every time we check something off our list I get really happy and then I see all the things we still have to do before the wedding and I panic a little. One thing that isn’t stressing me out is the dress. My mom is making my dress and she’s also taking a class in May with a couture sewing lady in Boston. Before class she has to have a completed muslin done so she can spend the week working on the dress with this lady. The lady has offered to fit me to the muslin before the class starts so we’re going down to her house in Maryland on May 1st. Guess what weekend that is? Maryland Sheep and Wool!!! I’ve been trying to go for years and I’ve never made it. Now I have no excuse! I’m super psyched but I don’t like the idea of going to a fiber festival while on a yarn diet. It will be hard but I can do it!

Now I have to get out my work clothes and find some din dins. Once that’s sorted I can bind off the shrug and start working on my next WIP. I hope the shrug works this time. Happy Friday!
